Georgian Drawing Room Herefordshire

This project was a straight refurbishment which required new windows and fire along with curtains, carpets, decoration and furniture.  The client wanted to keep all the lovely existing Georgian features, including the papier panelling, concealed timber shutters, cornice, ceiling rose and detail above the picture rail.  The sofas are the clients own and were recovered as they are so comfortable.

The client had a concern about keeping heat in and the room staying warm and with three outside walls we accomplished this with double glazed aluminium windows and doors, insulated floor, new cast iron radiators and a wood burner.

Our clients only note was “we fancy some orange; how do we do incorporate this without it being OTT?”  As you can imagine we were so excited, orange is such a strong and emotive colour and we looked at suitable colours to compliment the orange.  With this in mind we opted for orange as the accent colour and the base of the room being a beautiful deep navy and a subtle grey.  Both great backdrops for the orange to work with we then brought the orange in with chunky curtain poles, piping on the sofa and upholstery fabric for the two reading chairs having a splash of orange running through it.

The navy and grey as a backdrop is super but not only did it work with the orange it made the room cosier and by putting the navy above the panelling the walls came in making this enormous room much more comfortable to sit in.  This room it has to be stressed is of lovely Georgian proportions, 9m x 6.5m with a ceiling height of 3.8m.

The large mirrored coffee table was designed and made by us and is a whopping 1.2m x 1.2m in size and the reflections are amazing and dance on the navy walls beautifully. We went for mirror for its reflective properties as we were worried a wooden or large footstool would be too cumbersome and bulky within the space and we think it’s worked a treat.

The original marble fireplace is a wonderful misty grey with a darker grey vein running through it and the new contemporary styled wood burner sits really well within this gorgeous Georgian fireplace.

Our clients are delighted with the overall look and feel of the room and now find it a calm space to sit in. They enjoy both the interior and the exterior now, as this room looks out into the gardens from two sides and with the new minimal lead glazing the view is not impaired by lots of timber.
